What is a fixed head mill drill machine?
Fixed head mill drill machines, like the RF-45 shown above, have a very rigid structure, with the mill drill head fixed in an upright position to the chassis. The workpiece is clamped to a table that can be moved laterally for precision milling. These are the gold standard for conventional milling and drilling in most workshops.
Fixed head machines are popular because they can be made exceptionally rigid for very high positional accuracy. They are limited by the distance between the bit and the column, and to work at an angle the workpiece needs to be moved, requiring careful clamping.
Fixed head mill drill machines are also manufactured with cylindrical column mounts, like the Rong Fu RF-25 shown above. These usually allow for the head to be rotated laterally, this gives some of the benefits of the radial drill press while keeping the precision machining benefits of the mill drill. Cylindrical column mill drills can be rotated for ease of bit changing as well as to enable work on irregular workpieces, like the radial drill described below.
What is a radial drill press?
The RF-35 bench mounted radial drill shown above is a typical example of a high quality, heavy duty radial drill used for optimizing workflow when drilling multiple holes in heavy or unwieldy workpieces. The length of the radial drill arm allows drilling further from the edge of the workpiece than would be possible with a standard pillar mill drill machine of the same rating.
A benefit of bench mounted radial drills is that when working with a very heavy, large, or cumbersome workpiece the accuracy of cuts is unaffected by the weight of the workpiece. A conventional knee mill or drill table tends to sag under load, making bench mill drills a popular alternative for larger projects.
Radial drills are not as commonly used for milling, as the distance between the drill head and the stand increases the likelihood of vibration and chatter when milling, but with care a high quality radial drill can be used for some milling tasks as well as drilling holes. When choosing a mill drill or drill press a radial drill is a good choice if you often work with large workpieces.
What are the advantages of a swivel head mill drill machine?

The swivel head mill drill machine adds the ability to angle the cutter away from the vertical axis. With a fixed head mill drill, the workpiece needs to be reoriented and carefully clamped each time to mill and drill slots, faces and holes at different angles.
The swivel head mill drill enables you to keep the workpiece securely clamped to the work table while cutting and drilling at multiple different angles to the horizontal. This speeds up workflow because it reduces the number of times the workpiece needs to be moved and clamped, and reduces the risk of errors with complex and multi-angle cuts.
